ODIN GETS NOSTALGIC

In case you didn’t already know, Odin likes video games. A lot. Odin also likes violent video games. A lot. So if you are not interested in that, you may want to read something else about puppies or whatever.

But if you want to read Odin gush and get all shiny eyed about a fantastic Cyberpunk game, cheers!

For starters, I am COMPLETELY OBSESSED with System Shock 2 from Looking Glass studios (let’s be honest, I am obsessed with pretty much EVERYTHING made by Looking Glass Studios) and years ago I had decided to track down the original game.

The first game was created in ’94, when my gaming addiction was blossoming. I managed to find a copy in a vintage gaming shop (bigass box, manual, and all), and have no regrets purchasing it even though I have no idea how I thought I would be able to get it working…

Much to my relief, Good Old Games carried the original System Shock, along with other delightful treats that I remembered myself being addicted to. (Wing Commander FTW, FreeSpace: you imagination fueling tart)

I loaded it up….and found the retro Doom-like controls to be a difficult obstacle for me.

Odin is a Mature Adult

This rant may contain Spoilers for Stardew Valley from Concerned Ape and Chucklefish Games. Mind you, I haven’t gotten too far in the game, but if you want everything to be a surprise, you might not want to read this.

So I have been drawn into another game that I really don’t have time for. A few hours later, and I feel like someone really needs to take it away from me.

Like really, really needs to take it away:

Travels of Matteus: The Ara’yulthr Part 1

Journal Entry

Today I thought I would journey over to Vega and see what I can find about the Ara’yulthr. I am not sure what to expect, as they have a stagnant art culture, and spend most of their time building armies to defend their homeland rather than feed their creative desires.

I hope to unearth some form of tradition, perhaps even a few history books back from their tribal roots. But I am not holding my breath; it was difficult enough for me to get clearance to land on the planet. Although, people who have a militaristic governing system tend to mark themselves to denote kinship and achievements in battle, so perhaps I am not going to leave empty handed.

Matteus was escorted to the customs office by two heavily armed guards, dressed in intimidating uniforms. They ushered him at a hurried pace, giving him little time to absorb the beautiful scenery.

He approached a pod-like metal building, the illusion of modernism warped by the trees growing on top of roof, spilling their roots over the walls. He couldn’t tell if they were real or fake, but he admired the camouflage they provided amid the jungle.

Travels of Matteus: The Ara’yulthr Part 2

Journal Entry:

My trip to Vega was beyond fruitful, and I am not just referring to the practice minerals Danin gave me. The Ara’yulthr have had a few run-ins with my race before, and were more than willing to help me learn. I have even been permitted to speak with the scribes to learn more about their art as a style, a rare opportunity never seen by outsiders. It is a shame my brethren skipped over this place on their travels, they have missed a rare gem of knowledge.

These people have a very short period of pre-history. Even at their earliest development, they have recorded their achievements, granted in a more primitive language, but I don’t doubt the scribes can translate. I could literally spend decades here absorbing the books, but I fear the translator would pass out due to lack of breath. However, my guide, Talya, was ever so helpful in answering my questions.

Matteus was led deep into the forest, heading towards the Qui’isfahr clan primary library. Since this was one of the oldest buildings on the planet, he had high hopes to see some of the Ara’yulthr traditional architecture.

They stopped in front of a mound of rock, which had been conquered by the foliage. Massive tree roots intertwined with their neighbors in an intimate construction, dressed in garments of vines and grasses.  At the front of the structure, the roots parted into a hole barely large enough for a small human to climb inside.

Travels of Matteus: Camo Games

Journal Entry:

I have decided to explore Ilrydia for a while. Though modernized, the people have fiercely retained their traditions and practices. The people here were welcoming and hospitable, and they seemed enthusiastic to assist in my studies. With a bit of luck, I may even be able to witness one of their celebrations.

###

Matteus walked across the metal slat pier leading from the hangar. It was built to imitate wooden bridges, and its railings detailed with cables mimicking vines entangled in orderly knotwork. The land itself was a marvel, the earth sculpted into gentle hills, and trees burst from the ground at every direction. He could hear birds calling out and echoing in the air, joined by the whisper of leaves shaking in the mild breeze. Continue reading Travels of Matteus: Camo Games
