Weekly Progress Report

Not a whole lot to report on, and since this is the first post, I will just give a general impression of what I have been doing.

Mostly setting up this site, really.

As it stands right now, I have just finished the Beta version of Chapter 11, where Nara is having a wonderful fun time in Uppercity. (hint: no. no she is not.)

I am now currently working on the restructure of Chapter 12, where things start to climax in terms of final conflict. I have had to chip off pieces and smoosh other ideas together in order to make location transitions smooth. But I have all of the chapter plotted out, so finishing it should be no problem. *SHOULD* Continue reading Weekly Progress Report

Unwelcome Visitor

For those of you who are familiar with my current work in progress, you may notice a different dynamic between these two characters. That is because it is set in an earlier place along the timeline. Another book to add to the pile of unfinished garbage I suppose. Anyway, enjoy?
——————————————————————————

A scowl tainted Declan’s expression as he opened the door to his flat, the unexpected, expected intruder waiting for him inside.

“What did you get into now?” Declan griped at the armored figure sitting frozen in his chair.

“I have. Your pointy squish-squish,” Nara replied, addressing the little furry creature sitting on her.

“For the last time, that is a cat.” Declan pinched the bridge of his nose. “And I really don’t have the patience for your shit right now.”

“I don’t….understand it.” Nara ignored the doctor’s pleas, tilting her head in bemusement. “So tiny, but hunter?”

“Are you high and drunk again, or just high?” he sighed, grabbing tools from a cabinet nearby.

About Odin and Other Identities

I live to consume media in all of its forms in my relentless quest for rich story content. I have experience delving in content creation myself, ranging from books, comics, and even video games. From time to time, I am also found mastering dungeons and leading innocent party members to their demise on pen and paper platforms.

My professional background is in Game Development, and with my B.A. I focus primarily on mechanics and design, as well as narrative. I have been involved in several casual projects, as well as led teams in larger scale startup companies.

Being a chronically bored individual, I also partake in other crafty deeds around the internet.

I am also a freelance Editor, so for those of you who are interested in my services, you can find them on my website at Odin’s Edits.

When I am not creating fiction, I am also drafting technical instruction manuals for my handmade jewelry designs.

Here is one of my latest pieces, if you were curious:

If you would like an example of my jewelry instructions, take a look at my freebie PDFs on my Jewelry Site.

You can also find me yelling and cussing at beads amid other things on my YouTube channel, where I make a total fool of myself and scatter the web with my colorful metaphors.

ODIN NEVER ASKED FOR THIS

I apologize in advance for the lack of photos and a wall of text, I got a lot going on in my head, and I just can’t be bothered at the moment to find things that illustrate my angst towards this game. So I leave you with some suspicious breakfast cereal:

So…how suspicious we talkin’? Like, “unidentifiable fruit flavor” suspicious, or “the wheat was blended with a select choice of orphan blood” suspicious?

Ahhh, Deus Ex, how I love thee. Chop up my limbs and glue me to a particle accelerator, then inject my veins with tiny microscopic robots. My body is ready.

So I have finished the most recent extension to the Deux Ex universe: Mankind Divided. And, it was a good game. Which is my problem with it. Good game. Period. Not an excellent game. Or even a solid game.

ODIN STEALS BACK THE EMPIRE

Hunker down and grab a snack, kiddies. This one’s gonna be a long one. And I will be talking about a mature rated video game, so if you’re here from my beading and jewelry videos….well, you might want to skip this one. (I post more jewelry and nice things on Tuesdays on my YouTube channel…)

So over the winter break, I had the experience of playing this little gem right here:

Not shown – the grin plastered across my face stretching from ear to ear

ODIN IS A RIVETHEAD, AND RANTS WAY TOO MUCH

Now I know that my music tastes may be considered unappealing or even uncouth to a considerable chunk of my demographic, especially on the jewelry making side, but you guys read these posts to learn more about me as a person, right?

Regardless, I have a platform, and I’m damn well going to use it. Music is a very big part of who I am, and it has influenced me through out the majority of my life. It makes me feel…feelings. Things that I cannot express in words, which if you are familiar with my work, is a considerable feat. So this week I am going to ramble and rant about one of my strongest passions.

And if you find yourself intrigued, or even enjoying the experience, then good on you for opening up to trying new things. And if you don’t like it, that is awesome too! You still get props for trying something different.

ODIN REVIEWS CUTE NARWHALS

….or are they whales? IDFK.

So a while ago I did a favorites video featuring Squid and Pig/Platonic Games’ Sweet Sins: Kawaii Run that I played on my tablet (before it took a shit on itself.)

One of the features of this game was getting buffs from these adorable sea-like creatures called Miimos that helped you along your hell-bent journey.

Platonic games then released another addicting micro game featuring these adorable…things.

It’s so gd cute and it makes me feel….things.

ODIN REVIEWS POTATOES

That’s right, you fuckin heard me: Potatoes. Specifically: Potato Warriors. More Specifically: A weapons shop for Potato Warriors run by Potato Blacksmiths.

So what the fuck am I actually talking about? This:

Pretty fucking magical, right?

So you start off playing the lovable oaf who inherits the blacksmith shop from a dead grandpa. Or rather inherits the labor contract, because apparently, Uncle Moneybags (actually named Agent 46 in game) owns 99.99999999% of the profit. And you have to work off your grandfather’s debt too.

So it’s a Reality Simulator too!!

ODIN EDITS THE THINGS

This may or may not be useful to other aspiring authors out there, but I wanted to give a detailed outline of how my writing process actually works. It is not in any organized matter whatsoever. I basically start in a series of phases:

Sketch:

A sketch might just be a simple scene or concept that I want to add to whatever I am working on. It usually starts a new chapter. It is composed of a dialog interaction between characters, and then builds from there. I might have general idea of what I want to happen around the scene, but not a whole lot of details are included beyond general objectives. Punctuation and dialog tags are thrown out the window.

This is also the majority of the documents that flood my folder on my computer…I really should do something about that.

AN EXAMPLE FOR YOU:

“C’mon, Felix, I have to take inventory and resupply”
“Ok.” >:
“Ugh, fine. Just until you fall asleep though.”
“Ok.” *an hour passes*
“YouRe still awake, aren’t you…”
“Yes.”
“Goddammit Felix.”

Skeleton:

A skeleton is composed of one or many sketches stitched together. This is the backbone (heheh) of a chapter, and it defines the start point, and an end point, but that is all. It reads more or less like a screenplay, but with even less structure.

Stupid Mode:

This is where I say whatever garbage is necessary in order to get complete actions. The chapter at this point will be full of fragments and sentences written in my own personal voice, and is often riddled with memes and innuendo. If there are any key description points I want to include, I usually do so here.
This mode helps me get through writing blocks and pass over to areas of the document that I actually do have better ideas for, and makes me less frustrated with the entire process.

Red Phase:

This is where things start to get fleshed out. I turn whatever fragments I have plastered here into more coherent sentences, writing in whatever narrative voice I have chosen for the final product. I also flesh out dialog interactions into something readable. When I am finished with this phase, the document becomes adequately readable, but it is still rather plain. Like the Low Sodium versions of canned soup. Gross.

Blue Phase:

This is where I start to make things “pretty,” focusing on the senses of the reader to make the text more immersive. I will usually spend the most time in this phase. After I get it to my liking, I will also do a grammar/punctuation comb through before I release it to Black Phase to make sure I don’t anger the language gods.

Black Phase:

When the text reaches this point, it is generally considered “readable” to outside audiences. It may never be actually considered “finished” by my standards, but very few things I write ever are. I may still pass through this phase several times to find better ways of describing/shrinking things.
And that’s about it on how I make a first draft. Now you kind of know how my brain works….maybe. So whenever I reference these things on my Twitter or Facebook page, you now know wtf I am talking about.
